Introduction and Early Life:
Bruce Springsteen is an American singer-songwriter who is often considered to be one of the most iconic rock performers of the 1970s and ’80s. Known for his poetic lyrics and incredibly energetic music and concerts, Springsteen has sold more than 120 million records across the world. His primary backing band, the E Street Band, was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2014.
Born “Bruce Frederick Joseph Springsteen” in Long Branch, New Jersey, in September 1949, his father was a bus driver while his mother was a legal secretary. A college dropout, Springsteen started playing music at an early age. In his teens and early twenties, he played in a number of regional bands. In 1965, he became the lead singer of a local band named The Castiles.
Career and Musical Achievements:
Bruce Springsteen secured a recording contract with Columbia Records in 1972. His first two albums garnered favorable reviews but failed to achieve mainstream popularity. He attracted the attention of a larger audience with his third studio album, Born to Run (1975). Widely considered to be among the most memorable rock ‘n’ roll albums of all time, Springsteen scored front cover appearances on Time and Newsweek magazines. The album spawned seven top 10 hits in the United States, and sold more than 20 million copies worldwide.
Although he didn’t have the same luck with his subsequent releases, Springsteen remains one of the most enduring rock icons. In a career spanning almost five decades, he has championed the everyday lives of blue-collar American workers. His characters often struggle to coming to terms with the discrepancy between the fallacious promises of the American dream and the harsh realities of working class America.
Springsteen’s music drew from a wide variety of influences, including blues, folk, country and rock ‘n’ roll. His work with the E-Street Band has influenced countless singers and musicians across the world.
