Probably the most prominent pop star of her generation, American recording artist, dancer and actress Britney Spears achieved international super-stardom by using her sexual appeal to sell her “dance rhythm-bubblegum” brand of teen pop. With a turbulent and much-publicized personal life, Spears became a notable figure in popular culture with an estimated record sales of over 200 million units worldwide.
Born “Britney Jean Spears” in McComb, Mississippi in December 1981, she took voice lessons as young child and made her local stage debut at age five. She won several talent competitions and started her career as a child actor in television shows.
Career and Musical Achievements:
Britney Spears secured a recording contract with Jive Records in 1997. She released her debut album …Baby One More Time in 1999. Within the next few years, Spears would establish herself as one of the most famous figures in mainstream popular music and popular culture. Her first two albums made her a huge pop icon and broke various sales records, while title tracks “…Baby One More Time” and “Oops!… I Did It Again” topped music charts in several countries worldwide.

According to the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), Spears is the 8th best-selling female artist in the United States, with 33 million certified units. She is also recognized as the top-selling female artist of the first decade of the 21st century.
