Introduction and Early Life:

Probably the most prominent pop star of her generation, American recording artist, dancer and actress Britney Spears achieved international super-stardom by using her sexual appeal to sell her “dance rhythm-bubblegum” brand of teen pop. With a turbulent and much-publicized personal life, Spears became a notable figure in popular culture with an estimated record sales of over 200 million units worldwide.

Born “Britney Jean Spears” in McComb, Mississippi in December 1981, she took voice lessons as young child and made her local stage debut at age five. She won several talent competitions and started her career as a child actor in television shows.

Career and Musical Achievements:

Britney Spears secured a recording contract with Jive Records in 1997. She released her debut album …Baby One More Time in 1999. Within the next few years, Spears would establish herself as one of the most famous figures in mainstream popular music and popular culture. Her first two albums made her a huge pop icon and broke various sales records, while title tracks “…Baby One More Time” and “Oops!… I Did It Again” topped music charts in several countries worldwide.

Spears released her third studio album Britney in 2001 and the following year, accepted a major acting role, playing the main character in the 2002 film Crossroads. She truly gained creative freedom with her fourth studio album, In the Zone (2003). The album spawned chart-topping singles such as “Me Against the Music”, “Toxic” and “Everytime”. Coming back after a long career hiatus with her fifth album, Blackout (2007), she scored huge hits with “Gimme More” and “Piece of Me”. Although her next two releases, Circus (2008) and Femme Fatale (2011) also became worldwide hits, her most recent album, Britney Jean (2013), was a commercial failure.

According to the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), Spears is the 8th best-selling female artist in the United States, with 33 million certified units. She is also recognized as the top-selling female artist of the first decade of the 21st century.

Awards and Accolades:

Britney Spears has won various awards and accolades in her career. A few of them include a Grammy Award, six MTV Video Music Awards including the Lifetime Achievement Award, nine Billboard Music Awards, three World Music Awards, eight Teen Choice Awards, and a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

Personal Life:

The much-publicized personal life of Britney Spears has been very chaotic and made the headlines of many tabloids. Her 2004 marriage to Jason Alexander lasted only five hours before Spears filed for an annulment. Spears married her backup dancer, Kevin Federline, the same year and filed for a divorce in 2007. Her drug problems and erratic behavior nearly sent her career into hiatus. Spears is also an accomplished entrepreneur and philanthropist.
